Loving the romanticized prose and finding the hero's behavior towards his wife abhorrent leaves me a bit in a quandry.
Then again, he has suffered greatly during the crusades because of his unselfish honorable behavior; looking back I wish he should have suffered more. His wife has suffered almost her entire life with her father and now her husband. She can see to the heart of a person and yet she tries to help him see his way to heal and he does in the end. But even then for me its too little too late to make up for his penchant for being an insensitive, controling bastard toward his wife. Treating her like a treasured falcon keeping her prisioner in a dark room to tame her is unusual plot wise but disgusting behavior for someone who is supposed to be an honorable man.
That said - the plot is unusual. The prose is over the top but evokes the romantic allure of the medieval period. The dialogue is witty with dry humor. The characters are skillfully brought to life as unique individuals whether good or evil.
The mysticism is delicious.
I recommend the book. Just be aware this is basically a shed a few tears, clean up your act in the last few pages, great sex compensates for every mean, cold, insensitive word and act type of romance. I do give the long suffering heroine credit, she is very susceptibile to Dominic's sexual allure but retains an understanding of just where she stands - at one point she asks her husband if he could love someone who was just using him for her own selfish ends. I am rather in awe of Meg's abilty to love and forgive and yet be clear in her assessment of the situations she finds berself in.
Although I have no great liking for Dominic, I do like Duncan and Simon so I am on to the next two in the series.

Untamed Medieval Series Elizabeth Lowell 9780380769537 Books Reviews

I thought it was well written, but there are people that will not like this book because of the hero. I will talk about Meg first and then get to Dominic. Meg is a Glendruid, whose family was cursed a 1000 years ago. When she marries she will likely not be able to produce a child. Girl children are born occasionally if there is pleasure in the marriage bed. Boy children have not been born since the curse started. It is only if there is love in a marriage that a boy can be born. The male in the marriage has to be able to love the Glendruid woman, as she can see into people’s souls and tell what is in their hearts. This is the only way a Glendruid women can love a man. So there is no fooling them into thinking you love them. Meg is of course also a healer, and someone most everyone loves. She has a kind heart, but a strong will.

Dominic was held captive and tortured in Jerusalem as he traded himself for his brother and 11 other knights. He is unable to trust and thinks he can never love anyone because of this. He is referred as being very cold and is very logical about all he does. He has totally restraint on his feelings. Though he would never hit or beat anyone and hurt them that way, his mistrust does make him act and say things that are not necessarily nice occasionally. He has a big mistrust for Meg, because she was engaged, to Duncan the Scots Hammer. The King and the church refused to let them get married. Duncan is staying at the castle with Meg and there are rumors that Duncan and Meg are lovers. At one point Dominic locks her in her room for a while, and only he is allowed to see her. He does this because he will not commutate the marriage until she bleeds and he wants to back sure that she is not carrying Duncan's child. He eventually lets her out before her time comes. He does not believe her even though she told him she hasn't slept with Duncan. Dominic thinks he can get to Meg to love him even though he can't love her, as all he wants are sons. So he sits out to seduce her, and try to get her to love him, though he totally messes it up by saying things about her and Duncan, and that he only wants a son. Her knowing all he wants is her body for a son means that she will not produce a son.

If you do not mind a hero is damaged and has to grow to be a real hero, then you might want to take a chance on this book. He is tender and sensual with her at times. So it is not like he is mean to her all the time. There are just forces that are trying to bring the down fall of Dominic and Meg along with him. So rumors keep going around about Meg and Duncan. You do have an extra bad person or two and one of the people who it looks like is causing problems is not. There are no real sex scenes until about 80% of the way thru, however there is an almost scene probably around 70% thru, and a little bit of play earlier in the book.

Sex content low/medium.
I first discovered (Anne Maxwell writing as) Elizabeth Lowell's historical romances in my early teens, which probably explains why I have such a soft spot for her now. If you're looking for big blowsy melodramatic historical romances featuring love that cannot happen but must, well this is the author for you. She wrote three main historical series in the nineties and "Untamed," a medieval corker set in the north of England, is the first of three.

So here's the deal, Dominic Le Sabre (The SWORD) is a landless mighty Norman conqueror who smote verily in the crusades and won an English castle for his trouble. He has one main goal in life now that he's not being tortured by Saracens (to save his men, of course), and that's begetting heirs. Bucket loads of them. In fact, he's primed, with his baby making machinery ready to go.

But there's a problem.

The fair damsel that he's set to wed, Lady Margaret (a WITCH), is a "Glendruid" healer who is cursed to only have daughters unless she experiences the raptures (read screaming orgasm) of TRUE LOVE.

So that's the set up. There's a bunch of subplot going on, including a couple of other characters that went to star in their own novels but you have the idea.

Yes, the prose gets a little purple in places, the male characters are remarkably chatty for stoic warriors and Lady Margaret (Meg) spends most of her time giving herself a good wash but, when you get right down to it, Lowell knows how to do melodramatic romance. She's a master and no matter how many times I read "Untamed" or its friends, wincing at the bits that clang, I keep coming back to them. This is, essentially a classic "must read" if only to giggle at the phrase, "He was fully aroused, hot with passion and hard with generations yet unborn."
