The Girl Who Was Taken Charlie Donlea Books
This book relates a scenario you don't see happen too often - a girl is abducted but is able to escape and return. That is what happens to Megan McDonald - she is abducted from an end-of-high-school/pre-college party, but returns to not only tell her story, but write a book about it. Her book generates great public interest and turns her into a TV talk show heroine who has now "processed her ordeal and healed". Unfortunately, this is not the reality. Megan has not healed, and is attempting, with the aid of her psychiatrist and hypnosis, to recover the memories of her two week ordeal. Then there is the matter of Nicole Cutty, Megan's classmate and fellow party-goer. Nicole also vanished that night, presumably at the hands of Megan's abductor, and has not been seen since. Nicole's older sister, Dr. Livia Cutter, is a forensic pathologist fellow on her way to becoming a medical examiner. A year after her sister's disappearance, Livia feels a great burden of guilt. Consumed by the over-taxing schedule of her fellowship, she knows she turned away from her troubled younger sister's reaching out for her help. Worst of all, she ignored a phone call from her sister on the night of her disappearance. As part of her studies, Livia performs numerous autopsies on bodies brought in to the medical examiner and she is prepared for the day that Nicole is brought in and she can bring some closure to herself and her family. She reads Megan's book and can't help but resent her for coming out alive and apparently well, and profiting from her experience. After meeting Megan, she realizes this is not the case - Megan has never forgotten Nicole and feels guilt for surviving when Nicole has never been found. Together, they begin to investigate the circumstances surrounding the abductions and learn of other similar cases. Along the way, they meet some interesting and disturbing people with information on the case. The story moves back and forth from months prior to the abduction to over a year after Megan's return. There are also a few chapters spoken from the abductor's point of view, with his twisted emotions and skewed rationalization of his actions. At first, I thought this might be confusing, but it is a very effective device that gradually fills in all the history and details until the full picture emerges. There are a few red herrings - I was pretty sure I knew who the abductor was fairly early in the book, but nope - wrong! Then another possible lead emerged - another dead end. The book built to an exciting conclusion and the ending was truly shocking. The characters are extremely well-defined, fleshed-out and detailed - they are described so well, through their thoughts and actions, that I was actually picturing actors and actresses who I felt should portray them in the film that definitely should be made from this book. As a final note, this book was extremely well-edited, with none of the distracting typos or wrong word usage seen in so many e-books. I never rate books down for this type of thing because to me, the story is what is important, but it is nice not to have to deal with it. I highly recommend this book and definitely intend to read more of Mr. Donlea's work.

The Girl Who Was Taken Charlie Donlea Books Reviews
Mr. Donlea wrote an Intriguing story that kept me engaged entirely. I was up to the last three chapters and had to stop reading for a dinner party. Although I enjoyed myself, I kept looking at the clock, waiting until I could finish the last three chapters.
I was surprised by the revelation of the antagonist. I didn't see it coming, but I also think Mr. Donlea was a tiny bit heavy handed with his red herrings. They seemed to drop on us in well-timed increments, but were sort of left where they fell. They weren't developed or even really discussed.
I felt that the writing was crisp, descriptions were well-balanced with a action. I liked the soft cadence of the flow of his words.
I also really enjoyed the depth of each character, with the exception of Livie. I don't think Mr. Donlea fleshed her out as fully dimensional as she could've been. I felt like I really knew Nicole, Megan, and even Rachel and Jessica, but not Livie. It was most likely due to having had access to the others' thoughts.
And the ending both hurt and intrigued me. That's a good thing. I do believe I've found a good author to follow.
Not a bad book but it contained a couple key elements I don't love in my thrillers. Totally a personal preference.
SYNOPSIS
Nicole Cutty, who has never exactly been described as demure, seems to be going through a particularly wild phase the summer before she leaves for college. She is taking a lot of risks, seeking attention in all the wrong ways and dating an older, mysterious man. The whole town is turned upside down when both she and her arch rival, Megan, disappear from a party. Two weeks later Megan reappears having escaped her captor but Nicole is still missing when the book opens a year later.
Nicole's sister Livia, who is studying to be a medical examiner, is desperate to find out what happened to Nicole. The book flips back and forth between her present day search for Nicole and the weeks leading up to the abduction.
WHAT I LOVED
Good plot and characters. Nicole isn't your typical sweet innocent kidnapping victim most books portray. She definitely walks on the wild side and she was hard to like at times. Her character definitely avoided being the cliche victim.
One of the fringe characters, Nate, was fascinating to me. He was super creepy and reading his observations was a glimpse into a truly disturbed mind.
Since quite a few of the male characters were a bit off, I considered each of them as a potential suspect at one time or another. Although I had considered the actual perpetrator at one time, I wasn't sure until the very end. I had a couple other guesses as well.
I like psychological thrillers where the mindsets and thought processes of the characters are explored, this book delivers on that for sure.
WHAT I DIDN'T LOVE
No new ground broken here and few parts seemed a little tired and 'done.'
The very ending annoyed me. I don't want to say too much or it will be a spoiler, but it is not the way I like books to end.
OVERALL
A good summer read if you're not looking for a light hearted romance to read on the beach or at the pool. Don't expect it to change your life but expect to remain engaged throughout.
What kind of an ending was that !!!. I've heard of cliffhangers leading into another book but that was ridiculous. It left you nowhere and feeling totally unfulfilled. No next book for me.
