Now, I snagged a copy of Lex Talionis on Amazon, but I also picked up a copy of the paperback when I happened to be at the same book conference as Ms. Huchton. It was the bound and glued version I consumed in a day. That's right, it captivated me so hard I just couldn't put it down. But you're probably reading this review to learn what was good, bad, and ugly. Let's get to that.

From a Reader's Perspective:
I'd love to have a totally amazing friend like Lexi. She's fierce but loyal, and believes a woman deserves more and can do anything she puts her mind to if she uses the resources bestowed by nature. I loved her resolve to right wrongs. There were no holds barred. Yes. This is the thing all women should embrace. I eagerly consumed words as I waited for her to exact the revenge due.

I found the first round a bit lacking in emotional punch. When the time came, she didn't feel quite as much as I thought she might. While she was a private, reserved person who didn't show her emotions outwardly to everyone, I did feel the first situation could've had a bit more electrical charge.

However, I moved past it and put it to the emotional control factor of Lexi.

Who had done whatever had been done kept me guessing, and at the reveal I was stunned. I totally punched the air. Yeah, lame or whatever, but I was happy at the ending, and my fistpump shows how invested in the outcome I was. There was also never a time when I felt the pace dragged on.

From an Editor's Perspective:
There were little things here and there, but nothing to write home about. As in most books, a nominal number of errors slip through the cracks.

Rating:
1 star for making me care about the outcome
.5 star for a smart, self-controlled MC
-.5 star for the lack of punch in that pivotal scene
1 star for pacing and plot awesomeness
1 star for the overall theme and keeping me guessing
1 star for editing
Overall: 4.5/5 stars. I round up when clicking stars, so you'll see a 5. Recommended if you love books with a sassy female MC.

Lex Talionis S A Huchton Starla Huchton 9781508483489 Books Reviews

I just blazed through the whole book in one day. Despite the darker subject matter, I enjoyed the hell out of Lex Talionis. Even the emotional parts (I definitely teared up during a lot of the bits with Andria and Randi) were enjoyable, in that bittersweet way you experience when you've lost someone you love, but still love thinking about the time you spent together. Andria's struggle feels very real and her desire for justice is relatable. And unlike a lot of revenge tales, there weren't a bunch of moments where I was pulled out of the story thinking 'There's no way a normal person could do that.' The entire story, start to finish, feels very accessible. And so, so captivating. The flashbacks interspersed throughout the narrative, showing Randi and Andria's relationship, really serve to make the reader understand why Andria feels the way she does. It makes you root for her... not just to punish the people who hurt her friend, but for her to find the future Randi wished for her.
It isn't that this book is simply good. This book SHOULD be read by anyone and everyone who can get their hands on it. Presented as a murder/revenge story, it is also a comment on feminism and gender roles, identity, and how far we'll go to get justice.
Alexandra Ross has just lost her best friend in the whole world. Not to a random mugging as it's presented, but by cold, calculated murder. Lexi, as she's known, doesn't sit down and take it. Lexi doesn't mourn, Lexi doesn't stand idly by and let the justice system work its way around to realising what happened.
Lexi gets even.
And it's a damn good thing she does. Writing with a deft hand, Starla takes us through our world, populated by good, bad, and ambivalent people. There is abuse, sexism, manipulation, subject matter that is close to home. Starla handles it with grace and care. She doesn't shove the good and bad down your throat, she makes you root for Lexi and the way she goes about her revenge for Miranda who was an innocent girl that got caught up in so much bad s*** it makes you cry.
Lexi is the best friend we all wanted, she's the girl confident in her own battle armor but not so untouchable as to be un-identifiable. Lexi is the girl every single woman should strive to be, confident enough to know her worth, and dangerous enough to use it against a world that would see women underfoot and be damn happy for the opportunity.
Peppered throughout the story are serious questions about gender roles and identity that should start a conversation, or at the very least, make people think and question their own prejudices.
This is book for everyone.
It should be read.
Conversations should be had.
As a huge fan of Starla's I had no doubts about picking up this book and getting started. It has taken me quite a bit longer to get it finished than I normally would. At the beginning of the book I found it hard to stay interested and would pick it up and put it down over and over. This past week I picked it back up and haven't been able to put it down since. Even though the beginning didn't feel like my cup of tea by the end I was glad I kept pressing forward. One of the best things about Starla is her ability to write on a broad scope and touch on different topics even genres. This one was like a mystery and I constantly had to keep reminding myself I was reading one of her books. There are many lessons to be learned in this book and many ideas, some of those include

-The difference between right and wrong
-What would you do to revenge your best friends death
-Being able to live on bare necessities vs being able to have everything you could want and need
-Appreciating those who love and care for you and not taking it for granted
-Being able to trust others and yourself along with giving people chances
-What length do you go for a relationship with someone
-Taking calculated actions and being careful with who/what become collateral damage in the process

As a reader I went through many emotions especially at the end it was hard to not choke up and feel for the main character.
